FOOTBALL 2025!

🏈 UNC Football Weekly Update – May 30, 2025

Countdown to Kickoff: 93 Days to Atlanta

Carolina Football is making the most of the offseason as summer workouts are now in full swing. With the season opener against Georgia Tech less than 100 days away, the energy in Chapel Hill is high, and the expectations are even higher.

Quarterback Room Getting Competitive
All eyes are on true freshman Malik Wright, who’s already turning heads in voluntary workouts. Sources close to the program say Wright has impressed with his arm strength and composure, putting pressure on returning QB Conner Harrell. While Harrell remains the presumed starter, don't count out a midseason shake-up if Wright continues to develop at this pace.

Defensive Identity Taking Shape
Defensive coordinator Gene Chizik has been experimenting with new looks on defense, including more 3-3-5 alignments to maximize speed in the secondary. Veterans like DeAndre Boykins and Marcus Allen are stepping into leadership roles, and the linebacker corps looks deeper than it has in years, thanks to the emergence of Amare Campbell and RaRa Dillworth.

O-Line Strength and New Faces
The offensive line is quietly becoming a team strength. Anchored by veteran Will Barnes, the group is building continuity this summer. Transfer portal additions like Caleb Shaffer (Cincinnati) are expected to push for starting jobs.

Freshmen Report and Impress
The full 2025 recruiting class has officially reported to campus. Four-star WR Zion Williams and edge rusher Travis Hines are already drawing praise from the staff for their early adjustment to college-level speed and physicality.

Offseason Storylines to Watch:

  • Will a clear QB1 emerge by mid-June?

  • Can the defense take a leap under Chizik in year three?

  • Who will break out as a top playmaker with Devontez Walker and British Brooks gone?

Looking Ahead
UNC opens its season on August 31st against Georgia Tech at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. It’s a high-stakes ACC showdown that could set the tone for a pivotal season.

Alongside him, several new coaches joined the staff, including Freddie Kitchens as offensive coordinator and Stephen Belichick as defensive coordinator. Wikipedia

🔹 Facility Upgrades

In a move to enhance player safety and performance, Kenan Stadium will return to a natural grass playing surface for the 2025 season. This decision was made in consultation with Coach Belichick and aims to provide a more traditional and player-friendly environment. Tar Heel Blog+1tarheeltribune.com+1

🔹 Transfer Portal Activity

The team has seen some movement in the transfer portal. Notably, defensive end Beau Atkinson entered the portal in April 2025 and subsequently transferred to Ohio State. His departure leaves a gap in the defensive line that the coaching staff will look to address in the coming months. SI+2Wikipedia+2Keeping It Heel+2

🔹 Media Spotlight

Coach Belichick has been in the media spotlight recently due to his relationship with 24-year-old Jordon Hudson. Reports surfaced suggesting that Hudson had been banned from UNC's football facilities, a claim that the university has denied. Belichick has emphasized that Hudson has no involvement in the football program and that their relationship is personal. The Guardian
